Rowynn Ricks

Students from Turpin and Canton received top honors in the 2009 Paul Laune High School Art Competition.

Brenton Krikhart, of Turpin, won best of show for his “dramatic” painting of “Condemnation” and Brandon Hicks, of Canton, won the Spirit/Theme Award for his western-themed “If They Could Only Talk.”

The Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum received 330 entries in eight different artistic categories from students at 13 area schools as part of this year’s competition, according to Museum Director Robert Roberson.

Former art professor Cletus Smith served as the judge for this year’s competition and accepted 164 pieces out of the total entries to appear in an exhibit which will be featured in the museum’s art gallery, Roberson said. The exhibit opens Tuesday and will be on display throughout March, he said.

A reception for the competition winners and the other featured young artists will be held at the museum on March 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
