Dairy Queen hosting Girl Scouts

Woodward girls will have an opportunity to join the Girl Scouts this Thursday at the Dairy Queen on Main Street.

Girl Scouts-Western Oklahoma will be on site registering girls for the program from 4 to 8 p.m. as a part of Dairy Queen’s “Girl Scout Appreciation Week,” which began Monday and runs through Sunday.

GS-WO and Dairy Queen have teamed up to promote the new Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard, named for the popular Girl Scout cookie variety.

Ken Vasser, owner/operator of the Woodward Dairy Queen, said the new treat is one of the franchise’s most popular menu items.

“This is the first time we’ve ever done it,” Vasser said. “When they ran a test it was the most popular Blizzard flavor.”

The pale green frozen treat is made with soft serve ice cream, creme de menthe syrup and chunks of Thin Mint cookies.

Lisa Johnson, a field marketing executive for GS-WO, said she will set up the registration booth right in front of the restaurant. She said patrons can purchase the new treat at a discounted price.

“I gave them a big package of coupons,” Johnson said. She said the scouts were passing them out at various Independence Day celebrations in the area. The coupons are also available at Dairy Queen.

All girls ages 5 through 17 are eligible to join the Girl Scouts. Registration is $15 for the remainder of the summer and the entire 2009 program year, which begins Oct. 1. Registration will also be open to anyone who wishes to serve as a troop leader, co-leader or volunteer.
